For Mekhail, it speaks to the constant push and pull between being seen and being silenced, between showing up boldly and protecting the parts of herself that the world hasn’t always made room for.

As a woman, an Egyptian and an artist, there’s often pressure to fit into a mold, to speak just loud enough to be palatable, but not so loud that it makes people uncomfortable. The shadow across the face almost mimics a hand trying to silence her, censor her, or control how much of her is allowed to exist in public spaces.

And yet, the presence is undeniable.

The crushed glass is layered in intentionally. It’s not just texture, it’s tension. It reflects light, but can cut too. That duality mirrors her experience: soft but sharp, resilient but tender.

This piece is about navigating that complexity. About reclaiming space, and choosing what to reveal and what to protect; not because she’s hiding, but because it’s hers.
